David Fincher “Not Responsible” for Incels Idolizing Tyler Durden

We all know one of those guys who thinks Tyler Durden is the coolest. These are usually the same who don’t really understand the actual point of “Fight Club.” The 1999 film based on Chuck Palahniuk‘s novel of the same name has had it’s fair share of popularity. We don’t mean to say it’s only one kind of person who enjoys the book and film, but, it sure seems like they’re the most….vocal?

This is actually a topic director David Fincher was confronted with recently. Namely, how the far right and incels have co-opted the film and character into a touchstone.

“Ok, fine,” Fincher said. “It’s one of many touchstones in their lexicography. We didn’t make it for them, but people will see what they’re going to see in a Norman Rockwell painting, or [Picasso’s] Guernica. I’m not responsible for how people interpret things. Language evolves. Symbols evolve.”

He’s not….wrong. It’s not like he set out to make a film to glorify that kind of lifestyle [*cough* Todd Phillips and “Joker” *cough*]. But the sheer amount of young and middle-aged men WHO STILL THINK Durden and co are cool, and not there to serve as warnings? Kind of outrageous.

If you want to remind yourself, “Fight Club” is available to rent or buy on Amazon now.

Fincher’s next project “The Killer” stars Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton. It’s due out on Netflix November 10th, 2023.
