James Gunn Debunks “Superman: Legacy” Casting Rumors

Anytime a new superhero film in on the horizon, you can bet there will be rumors. Hell, even when there ISN’T an actual movie on the docket, you get those ‘sites’ who claim a reboot or whatever is in the works, with their own picks for stars. Since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the newly created comic arm of Warner Bros. Pictures- DC Studios– we’ve at least gotten some clarification as to what projects are coming. Things like….”Superman: Legacy.”

Gunn himself is writing and directing the film, which will feature a new actor as Kal-El, aka Clark Kent, aka Superman. Because of this, rumors have abounded for months about who may take on the mantle of the Last Son of Krypton. Some sources have claimed it’s already a done deal, mentioning such actors as Nicholas Hoult and David Cornswet as Lex and Superman. Other current rumors include Emma Mackey (“Sex Education“), Rachel Brosnahan (“Marvelous Mrs. Masiel“), Phoebe Dynevor (“Bridgerton“), and Samara Weaving as Lois Lane hopefuls.

But as he’s want to do, Gunn has responded via his Twitter.

“For all of you asking, I would never comment on who is or isn’t AUDITIONING for a role,” Gunn said. “That’s the actor’s business only & isn’t something I’d make public unless they did it first after the fact (like Glenn Howerton or Zachary Levi having auditioned for Star-Lord & being top choices).”

The really interesting thing though is his confirmation that one role HAS been cast. “For now, only one person has been CAST in Superman: Legacy, and it isn’t any of the regular players in the Superman world.” The statement was followed by the merman emoji.

This could be taken one of three ways. A new Aquaman? Jason Momoa returning as Aquaman? Or, Gunn making a joke about those rumors trying to fish for information?

In any case, we expect to hear news about casting sometime this summer. Possibly during San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), which takes place July 19th-23rd 2023. “Superman: Legacy” has a current release date of July 11th, 2025.
