Most will remember reading Eleanor Coerr‘s “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes” in school, the true tale of Hiroshima bombing survivor Sadako Sasaki.

Film Independent has apparently boarded sales for a new film adaptation of the story ahead of the Cannes International Film Festival, and it will feature an Across The Universe reunion (although clearly that is not the most important factor in this film).

According to Variety, Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) and Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas) will star in One Thousand Paper Cranes, as well as Japanese actress Shinobu Terajima (Vibrator, Caterpillar).

    The outlet says:

The film will tell the true story of Sasaki, who was a 2-year-old in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped on the city in 1945. She was later diagnosed with leukemia caused by exposure to radiation from the blast. She drew strength from a Japanese legend that, if she folded 1,000 paper cranes, she would be granted a wish, which in her case was to live.

Coerr, an aspiring journalist and young mother, learns of the girl and becomes determined to share her story with the world. The Canadian-American author’s subsequent children’s book went on to achieve classic status after its publication in 1977.

Richard Raymond is on board to direct the film from Ben Bolea‘s blacklist script, with Ian Bryce producing alongside Richard Raymond and Irene Yeung.

We’ll let you know what we hear about this project.
